The Revista de Biología Tropical grants the de Girolami Familiy Award to the best biomedical publications.

Periodically, the journal names an ad hoc board to review all biomedical articles that have been published in a particular period (usually, one year).

The winner is selected on the basis of quality. The goal of the award, funded by the de Girolami Family, is to support biomedical research in Costa Rica. The winner receives a certificate and a check for about US$2000 in a formal ceremony.

According to the award's rules, participation is automatic for all Costa Rican authors of biomedical papers published in the Revista.

The de Girolami Award was established in 1995 by Dr. Ettore de Girolami and his family. He was an Italian-born cytologist and pathologist who lived in Costa Rica from 1952 to 1958.

During this period he teached at the University of Costa Rica and did important research on cancer and other fields of biomedicine.

Dr. De Girolami died in 2006.
